One hears about big comic book conventions a lot these days. They’ve gone from small niche events to being a part of pop culture. That is what has probably made them as popular as they are now, going from just being about comic books to being about a little bit of everything. Just walking around the entrance to the Phoenix Convention Center (PCC) you’ll see Batman, Storm Troopers, Doctor Who and Cowboys all heading inside.
The PCC is well air conditioned, however, the half mile walk from the parking garage to the PCC is not. Downtown Phoenix in May is hot. Bring a good size water bottle and snacks because water and food inside is pricey and also it is a really long line to buy anything. Pacing your self and finding time to take it easy is very important.
The amount of people that show up is just amazing. I stopped to say “hi” to someone I knew and realized I was holding up fifty people behind me, waiting to get through. The flow of people never stopped.
The panels with actors like Will Wheaton, Amanda Tapping, Jewel Staite and so on were very popular. Almost impossible to get in. However, if you wanted to go to panels with authors like Brandon Sanderson and Terry Brooks or comic book writers/artists like Terry Moore, those were easy to get into. I saw four panel for the price of waiting in line for one actor panel.
The nice thing about these conventions is the attendees get to see what is coming up in the world of comics, film, TV, games and novels but there is no way to see everything and by the end of it you’re saying “guess I’ll have to come back next year to see the rest.”
